Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving to all, I hope it was a fat one.
Personally, the weekend was highlighted more by the opening of the mountain. Though only a few lifts were open due to lack of snow, it was still great to get on a snowboard again. As for the snow, we were hit by a huge storm starting friday, and got over two feet. This is good news in that more of the mountain will open up, and I can get back to riding some of my favorite terrain.
As for the holiday, it was fairly uneventful. I had hoped the Lift Department would be feeding us like they did last year, but all they had was a couple of pumpkin pies, which by the way did not hold a candle to Mom's. So to celebrate, my roomate James and I stayed home and drank a few beers. And I made Hamburger Helper with ground turkey instead of ground beef. Pretty exciting, I know, but we were a bit worn out after spending the week getting the mountain ready to open.
It was nice to get back into the swing of things after being laid off and bored for three weeks. There seems to be a good group of new employees, as well as several returning friends I met last winter. When people think of Aspen they imagine the playground for the rich and famous, all glitz and glamour. But you have to realize that there is also a large community of people who make their living serving the wealthy. It is this blue collar crowd that constitutes my base, and I find they are a fascinating group of people who really know how to get the most out of life.
I spent a good portion of today snowboarding, and have realized just how out of shape my legs are. Last year I was just learning, so it wasn't a problem gradually building up my strength. However, now that I can just get up and go, I've found that after a few hours of riding, I can hardly walk. Luckily, most of my friends are having the same problem, so we're all at the same pace right now.
I've been promoted this year from lift attendent to lift operator. Basically this gives me the opportunity to have three days off. While it means working a bit longer during my four days on, it also means an extra day of snowboarding every week, which is why I'm here. Also news for those who have visited, is that I've moved to a different apartment. Same complex, different room. A two-bedroom that I share with my Scottish friend James. We like it better than having more roomates, and we've got a better view of the mountain. I've posted a picture.
Anyways, I'm off to bed, gotta catch the 6:30 shuttle to work in the morning. I'll try to post more pictures soon, I'm just learning the features of this website.
Peace and Love,
Rob
